Morgan Russell (American, 1886-1953)

  • Notre Dame Cathedral on the Seine River An enchanting Parisian landscape -- by the founder of the Synchromist art movement in Paris 1908 -- it was painted just a short walk from the artist's apartment. Russell captured the mood of the famous river Siene, bustling people, traffic and Notre Dame cathedral.

Jacob Steinhardt

Jakob (Jacob) Steinhardt (German-Israeli, 1887-1968)

  • Steinhardt studied under Lovis Corinth and the German painter Herman Struck, while in Paris he studied under Matisse, Jean-Paul Laurens and Theophile Steinlen.  He became the founder of the German Expressionist art movement Die Pathetiker in 1912, and later he became the director of the Belazel School of Arts and Crafts in Israel between 1934 and 1949. He is considered one of the most important artists in both Germany and Israel.
  • This is an early academic work done in Paris, France in 1909. The blue tones and date of this painting coincide with Matisse's famous blue period.
  • It measures 38 x 49 cms.
