Elmer Wachtel (American, 1864-1929)

  • This early tonalist work by Elmer Wachtel was created around the turn of the century circa 1905. It was during this time Wachtel painted some of his finest works, this one appears to be in northern California possibly an inland valley near Monterey-Carmel or the Marin County areas. Painted in a dramatic Barbizon style, it features a striking green, yellow and pink sunset, while being set against a darkened foreground of  earth, shrubs and the silhouette of a California oak all done with rich browns, blues, purples and subtle greens.

  • This springtime farm scene is believed to lie near the small town of Lone Pine, California in the Owens Valley along what today is known as Highway 395. In the distance can be seen a low lying snow covered mountain range believed to be the Inyo Range.

  • This tropical scene is titled and dated by the artist "Fishing Boats, Hull Bay, Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands 1957".

  • Like Winslow Homer who made frequent trips to warmer climates including Bermuda, Cuba, Nassau and Florida in order to escape the harshness of Maine’s winters, Wiggins decided upon St. Thomas, Virgin Islands for his tropical getaway.
  • This painting came from the collection of the early screen actress Alice Moffat and descended in her family.
  • It is beautifully framed in a period Louis XV style 22K frame
