Charles Percy Austin (American, 1883 - 1948)

  • This scene was painted in the inner Mission San Juan Capistrano courtyard just a short distance from the garden's fountain. The featured poinsettia flowers were imported by the mission padres from Mexico City in the 18th century. Many of the early California masters such as Alson Clark, Colin Campbell Cooper, Joseph Kleitsch along with C. P. Austin painted and resided at the Mission San Juan Capistrano in the 1920s

Alson Skinner Clark (American, 1876-1949)

  • This early European scene depicts a couple going for a stroll along a fence, it features a wonderful view of a town's white stucco buildings with red rooftops and a large Impressionist sky -- golden lights emanate from a few windows as the sun is beginning to set. Alson Clark was a member of the elite group of Americans that had the opportunity to paint and train in Europe with the original masters of French Impressionism. An Alson Clark expert has dated the painting to circa 1910, it bears a Paris exhibition stamp, and an Anderson Galleries, Chicago label verso.

Their art was generally viewed as a social commentaries unflattering to blacks, however in The Poker Players these young black men are rendered in a friendly and charming manner.
