Theodore Campos Artist Biography:
Theodore "Ted" Campos is a California artist who resides in Ojai, California. His artistic talent was recognized at an early age where his elementary school teachers and parents encouraged him to develop his talent. Primarily a self-taught artist, he began painting at a rapid pace and intense level in 1970 when he moved to the islands of Hawaii. Campos has now been producing his art for thirty-seven years. His work can be found throughout the world, in England and France, and many paintings hang in the galleries and homes in Ojai Valley, California.
Ted Campos was born in Portage, Wisconsin in 1948. In his youth, Campos moved frequently and grew up in different environments in California such as Salinas, Newport Beach, and San Jose. Campos’ inspirations include the diverse Californian and Hawaiian landscapes, and his artistic influences range broadly from Van Gogh and Rembrandt to the living artists he has painted with through the years. It seems that Campos’ works endlessly touch the admirers; and the artist himself has always had a strong influence on other art-producing and art-loving people near to him. Many years in which Campos has painted have been spent side-by-side with other artists, such as fellow painter William “Bill” Dorsey, in an informal group they like to call The Artlaws and, whether in a studio or not, remain life-long friends.
Campos mainly works in oil paint, but he also produces ink drawings that tend to be of landscapes, spiritual, abstract, or comic style. Those who are familiar with Campos’ oil paintings know that within the hundreds of paintings he continually produces there are many different “eras”. The “eras” are not merely a reflection of the sequential development of skills, but rather chapters of soulful expressions. Throughout the eras Campos has painted unique abstract/expressionist work, scenic landscapes, and many portraits of familiar musicians, Hawaiian royalty, actors, and other characters of interest. Many of Campos’ paintings seem to be expressions of things in the spiritual realm. Sometimes a Campos painting will allow you to travel to somewhere else, or take you back to a place you’ve been. Campos manages to always have a quality of originality in his work and captures the attention of many with his creativity and range.
Chances are if you have ever owned, or had a strong desire to own a Campos painting, you felt a personal sense of connection to that painting. His paintings speak out in different ways and to different people. And if you asked the artist, he would tell you most paintings go to homes exactly where they’re meant to be. In this way, Campos is detached from the art that he creates, though in the work he also gives a big part of his soul as it is in the making of that painting.
